Electrochemical chloride extraction & cathodic protection

The Loy Yang B Power Station is one of Australia’s largest and most modern coal-fired power plants, with a capacity of approximately 1,100 MW. The staged remediation program builds on a successful trial of seven corrosion-protection systems, with MCM GreenTech® Shield selected as the first-ranked solution for large-scale application across the cooling towers.

Commissioned in 1993, Loy Yang B power station features advanced technology for improved efficiency and reduced emissions compared to older power plants. It plays a key role in Victoria’s energy generation while facing increasing focus on transitioning to renewable energy. Following a successful corrosion-protection trial, MCM is delivering a staged remediation program across the Loy Yang B cooling towers, integrating specialist access, concrete repair, MCM GreenTech® Shield electrochemical chloride extraction and protective coatings. Stage 1 was completed in 2026, with Stage 2 forming the next phase of the ongoing works.

Client Brief

The client required a practical, repeatable remediation program to progressively address concrete deterioration and chloride contamination across the cooling towers while accommodating their scale, geometry and operational constraints. The selected methodology followed a trial of seven corrosion-protection systems, with MCM GreenTech® Shield ranked first overall in an independent assessment.

What we delivered:

  • Specialist access systems tailored to the cooling tower geometry

  • Removal of delaminated and deteriorated concrete

  • Reinforcement preparation and concrete reinstatement

  • MCM GreenTech® Shield electrochemical chloride extraction

  • Localised corrosion protection at repair areas

  • Fairing and protective coating systems

  • Quality assurance, monitoring and staged handover

  • Progressive delivery across multiple remediation stages

MCM GreenTech® Shield is IP protected
